Our client’s network racks had become highly disorganized over time, with excessive cable clutter, unmanaged patching, and inconsistent labeling. This led to frequent troubleshooting delays, increased downtime risk, and cooling inefficiencies within the server room. The project’s objective was to redesign, re-patch, and optimize the existing rack infrastructure to achieve: - Improved network reliability - Enhanced airflow and cooling efficiency - Streamlined cable management for simplified troubleshooting and scalability
Client Industry: [Confidential – Enterprise IT Infrastructure]
Location: Schlieren, Switzerland
Scope: Network Rack Refurbishment & Structured Cabling
Severe Cable Congestion – Unstructured cabling made identification of ports and devices extremely difficult.
High Downtime Risk – The live environment required careful handling to avoid disrupting ongoing operations during the restructuring.
Cooling Inefficiencies – Poor airflow due to cable obstruction risked overheating of switches and servers.
Assessment & Documentation: Conducted a full audit of the existing rack layout, port mapping, and device interconnections.
Structured Cabling Practices: Applied best practices using patch panels, cable organizers, and labeling standards (TIA/EIA-606) to bring the racks into compliance.
Phased Intervention: Executed the intervention in phases to minimize downtime, carefully re-patching cables without service interruption.
Airflow Optimization: Re-routed and bundled cables to improve ventilation and rack cooling efficiency.
Before vs. After Transformation: The initial rack (image 1) was cluttered, with tangled cables and unmanaged connections. After intervention (image 2), the rack was fully optimized with structured patching, neatly bundled cables, and labeled ports.
Reduced mean time to repair (MTTR) by enabling faster fault isolation and port identification.
Improved airflow and cooling, reducing hardware stress and enhancing system longevity.
Delivered a final rack documentation package, including port mapping and cable labeling schema for ongoing maintenance.
The client now benefits from a professional-grade, structured cabling environment that is easier to manage, more reliable, and fully scalable for future growth.
